A Note on the 2025 Cyclone Damage
Cyclone Ditwah caused significant damage to parts of Sri Lanka’s railway network in late 2025, including sections of the Upcountry Line. Restoration has been taking place progressively.
As of June 2026, train services between Badulla and Nanu Oya have resumed following repairs to the Ambewela–Nanu Oya section. Sri Lanka Railways has also confirmed that restoration work continues on other affected sections of the Upcountry Line.
This means travellers should not automatically assume that a full Kandy–Ella rail journey is operating on their travel date. The most scenic available section can still be incorporated into an itinerary, with a private road transfer connecting the remaining route where necessary.
